Beginning Sounds (Diwali)
Four Diwali pictures (diya, lantern, marigold and sweets), each with its word missing the first letter (_iya, _antern, _arigold, _weets) and three lowercase letters to choose from. Children listen for the first sound and circle the right letter.
How to use this worksheet
- Say the name of the first picture slowly, stretching the first sound.
- Look at the three letters and circle the one that starts the word.
- Read the finished word together, then color the pictures.
What your child practices
Hearing the first sound in a word and linking it to a letter. The answers are d, l, m and s, and the other choices look and sound different on purpose, so children aren't tripped up by look-alikes.
Who it is for
Made for Pre-K children around four to five who know some letter sounds. If the letters are new, say each letter's sound and let your child choose by listening.
Keep it going
Play "I spy something that starts with..." while you decorate: d for diya, r for rangoli, s for sweets. A few minutes of sound games beats a second worksheet.
