Which One is Different? (Diwali)

Five rows of Diwali pictures (diyas, lanterns, marigolds and plates of sweets), each with one that does not belong. Children look carefully and circle the odd one out.

Age4–5 years
PaperA4 / Letter, 1 page
Time10 minutes
Parent tipName every picture in the row together first: 'diya, diya, lantern, diya'. Hearing the odd word out often helps children see the odd picture.

How to use this worksheet

  1. Look carefully at all four pictures in the row.
  2. Find the one that is not like the others.
  3. Circle it and move on to the next row.
  4. Color your favorite picture for the bonus.

What your child practices

Finding the odd one out builds visual discrimination, the careful looking children later use to tell similar letters and words apart. It also trains attention: checking every picture in the row before deciding.

Who it is for

Made for children around three to five. Each difference is a whole picture, which is the easiest level. For an extra challenge, set out four objects at home, three the same and one different, and ask your child to explain which one does not belong.

Talk about Diwali

Use the pictures to chat about the festival. Diyas are lamps that light up homes, marigolds are used to make garlands, lanterns hang in windows and sweets are shared with family and friends. Asking 'where have you seen this?' turns a quick sheet into a conversation.
