What Comes Next? (Diwali Patterns)
Four rows of Diwali patterns using diyas, marigolds, lanterns and sweets: two AB patterns, one AAB and one ABB. Children circle which of two pictures comes next.
Age4–5 years
PaperA4 / Letter, 1 page
Time10 minutes
Parent tipRead each pattern out loud like a chant: "diya, flower, diya, flower..." Children often hear what comes next before they see it.
How to use this worksheet
- Point to each picture in the row and say its name.
- Decide what comes next and circle it in the box on the right.
- Do every row, then color the pictures.
What your child practices
Spotting and continuing a pattern, an early math skill. The answers are diya, lantern, marigold and diya, and the harder AAB and ABB rows ask children to look at the whole row, not just the last picture.
Who it is for
Made for Pre-K children around four to five. If the AAB row is tricky, cover the answer box and build the pattern with real objects first.
Patterns around the house
Rangoli designs, string lights and flower garlands are full of patterns. Point them out, then make your own with colored rice, beads or paper cutouts.
