Adding Within 20 (Make a Ten)

A Grade 1 addition page in three boxed parts: 12 facts within 20, two make-a-ten problems that show the strategy step by step, and a short story problem about stickers. Clean layout with plenty of writing space and a small watercolor illustration.

Age6–7 years
PaperA4 / Letter, 1 page
Time10 minutes
Parent tipFor sums like 8 + 5, show the make-a-ten trick with real objects: move 2 of the 5 over to make 10, then add the 3 left over. Once it clicks, it speeds up every fact past 10.

How to use this worksheet

  1. Solve the 12 facts in Part A. Counting on from the bigger number is a good strategy.
  2. In Part B, split the second number to make 10 first, then finish the sum.
  3. Read the story problem in Part C, write a number sentence and answer in a full sentence.

What your child practices

Adding within 20, a core Grade 1 skill in US standards, plus the make-a-ten strategy (8 + 5 = 10 + 3) that helps children move past counting on their fingers. The story problem practices turning words into a number sentence. Answers: A) 13, 15, 12, 16, 12, 18, 15, 16, 17, 15, 17, 13; B) 3 and 13, 5 and 15; C) 16 stickers.

Who it is for

Made for first graders around six to seven who know their facts to 10. If the make-a-ten boxes are new, use ten-frames, egg cartons or two rows of five coins to show how the numbers split.

Practice ideas

Play "make ten" with a deck of cards (pairs that add to 10), or roll two dice and add, saying the make-a-ten step out loud for sums over 10. Five minutes a day builds fluency faster than long sessions.
