Space Code Breaker (Multiplication Facts)

A space-mission code breaker for Grade 3: ten multiplication facts from the 3s to the 9s, each linked to a letter, and an eight-letter secret launch code to crack. Includes a bonus question about square numbers. Designed like an activity book page, with a watercolor rocket header.

Age8–9 years
PaperA4 / Letter, 1 page
Time10 minutes
Parent tipLet your child solve all ten facts first, then decode. If they get stuck on a fact, ask them to use one they know: 6 × 7 is 6 × 5 plus 6 × 2.

How to use this worksheet

  1. Solve the ten multiplication facts in Part 1. Each answer has a letter next to it.
  2. In Part 2, find each number under the boxes in your answers and write the matching letter.
  3. Read the secret launch code, then try the bonus mission about square numbers.

What your child practices

Recalling multiplication facts within 100, the main Grade 3 math goal in US standards. Using the answers as a code gives instant self-checking: a wrong answer turns the message into nonsense. Answers: A 42, B 32, E 64, F 54, L 49, N 63, O 27, R 36, S 40, T 24. The code spells BLAST OFF, and the square numbers are 64 and 36.

Who it is for

Made for third graders around eight to nine who are learning or reviewing their times tables. It also works as a fun warm-up for fourth graders. If a fact is tricky, let them draw an array or skip-count to find it.

Make your own codes

Once they finish, challenge your child to write a secret message for you using their own multiplication facts. Writing the puzzle is even better practice than solving it.
