Beginning Sounds (Halloween)

Four friendly Halloween pictures (bat, ghost, moon and pumpkin), each with its word missing the first letter (_at, _host, _oon, _umpkin) and three lowercase letters to choose from. Children listen for the first sound and circle the right letter.

Age4–5 years
PaperA4 / Letter, 1 page
Time10 minutes
Parent tipStretch the first sound when you say each word, like "b-b-b-bat". The word under each picture is missing its first letter, so your child can see exactly which letter belongs in the gap.

How to use this worksheet

  1. Say the name of the first picture slowly, stretching the first sound.
  2. Look at the three letters and circle the one that starts the word.
  3. Read the finished word together, then color the pictures.

What your child practices

Hearing the first sound in a word and linking it to a letter. The answers are b, g, m and p, and the other choices are easy to tell apart, so the focus stays on listening.

Who it is for

Made for Pre-K children around four to five who know some letter sounds. If the letters are new, say each letter's sound and let your child choose by listening.

Keep it going

Ask your child to think of more words that start like bat (ball, bus) or moon (mom, milk). Silly made-up words count too, since the point is hearing the sound.
