What Comes Next? (Halloween Patterns)
Four rows of Halloween patterns using bats, ghosts, pumpkins, cats, candies and moons: two AB patterns, one AAB and one ABB. Children circle which of two pictures comes next.
Age4–5 years
PaperA4 / Letter, 1 page
Time10 minutes
Parent tipRead each pattern out loud like a chant: "bat, ghost, bat, ghost..." Children often hear what comes next before they see it.
How to use this worksheet
- Point to each picture in the row and say its name.
- Decide what comes next and circle it in the box on the right.
- Do every row, then color the pictures.
What your child practices
Spotting and continuing a pattern, an early math skill. The answers are bat, pumpkin, candy and pumpkin, and the AAB and ABB rows ask children to look at the whole row.
Who it is for
Made for Pre-K children around four to five. If the AAB row is tricky, cover the answer box and build the pattern with real objects first.
Make your own pattern
Line up wrapped candies or small toys in a pattern and ask your child to continue it, then swap roles. Making a pattern is harder than finishing one, and great practice.
