Add and Write (Within 10)
Five picture sums with totals from 7 to 10: apples, oranges, bananas, stars and balloons. Each row shows two groups with a gap between them next to a written number sentence such as 4 + 3 =, so children connect the pictures to the numbers and write the sum.
How to use this worksheet
- Count the first group of pictures in the row, then the second group.
- Read the number sentence and write the total in the box.
- Check by showing the two numbers on your fingers and counting them all.
What your child practices
Adding two groups within 10 and reading a number sentence with + and =. This matches what Kindergarten classes in the US work on: understanding addition as putting together, and moving from counting pictures to working with numbers. The sums are 7, 8, 9, 8 and 10.
Who it is for
Made for Kindergarten children around five to six who can count to 10 and write their numbers. If writing 7 or 9 is still tricky, let them say the answer and write it with you, or use the pictures to count all.
Try it at home
Play "make 10" with a handful of coins, crackers or blocks: put out 7 and ask how many more make 10. Talking about the same totals in different ways (6 + 2 and 5 + 3 both make 8) builds number sense faster than drilling.
