Beginning Sounds (Thanksgiving)
Four watercolor Thanksgiving pictures (pumpkin, acorn, turkey and pie), each with three lowercase letters beside it. Children say the word, listen for the first sound and circle the letter it starts with. The letter choices are easy to tell apart, so the focus stays on listening.
How to use this worksheet
- Say the name of the first picture slowly, stretching the first sound.
- Look at the three letters and circle the one that makes that sound.
- Do every row, then color the pictures.
What your child practices
Hearing the first sound in a word and linking it to a letter, one of the first steps in phonics. The answers are p, a, t and p, and the other letters in each row look and sound different on purpose, so children aren't tripped up by look-alikes such as b and d.
Who it is for
Made for Pre-K children around four to five who know some letter sounds. If the letters are still new, say each letter's sound and let your child choose by listening, then trace the circle together.
Keep the sounds going at the table
Play "I spy something that starts with..." during a holiday meal: p for potatoes or plate, c for corn or cup, t for turkey or table. Short sound games like this give more practice than a second worksheet.
