Big and Small (Thanksgiving)

Five rows with a big and a small watercolor picture each: a pumpkin, an acorn, a turkey, a maple leaf and a pumpkin pie. The big picture is sometimes on the left and sometimes on the right, so children really compare instead of always circling the same side.

Age3–4 years
PaperA4 / Letter, 1 page
Time10 minutes
Parent tipUse the words big and small out loud for every row, and show the size with your hands. Children pick up comparison words fastest when they hear and see them together.

How to use this worksheet

  1. Look at the two pictures in the first row and say which is big and which is small.
  2. Circle the big one.
  3. Do every row, then color the small ones.

What your child practices

Comparing sizes is one of the first measuring ideas in early math. Hearing and using the words big and small, and later bigger and smaller, gives children the language they need for measuring, sorting and counting later on.

Who it is for

Made for preschoolers around three to four. The pictures are large and there are only two in each row, so the page is easy to manage for children who are new to worksheets.

Try it at home

In the kitchen, find a big and a small version of the same thing: two spoons, two apples or two potatoes. Ask your child to hand you the big one, then the small one. Then swap roles and let them ask you.
